The True Sour

This is the True Sour—the drink of the week. It can be made with almost any spirit, but today I made it with vodka. Most bars make a vodka sour with sour mix and club soda, or with cheap sweetener. But that’s not how a real sour should taste.

Instead, I’m using a recipe from The Cocktail Primer by Eben Klemm—a must-read book that covers everything you need to make perfect cocktails. The difference? Fresh lemon juice and simple syrup instead of sour mix. It’s night and day.

Garnished with a lemon slice and cherry, this is the sour cocktail done right.

Why Fresh Matters

Sour mix is basically sugar and citric acid. It lacks the brightness and complexity of fresh lemon juice. Making a sour with fresh ingredients takes maybe two minutes, and the taste difference is dramatic. Once you try a real sour, there’s no going back.

The beauty of this recipe is that it works with any spirit. Vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, even tequila—the formula stays the same. Experiment and find your favorite.
