Base BBQ Sauce

Basic BBQ Sauce

This is my go to bbq sauce base.  It is perfectly balanced and is the base sauce for all of my sauces.  Like a sweet and tangy sauce, add honey and a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sauce.  Like it vinegary then add 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar.  Like it spicy add a pinch of cayenne, 2 tablespoons hot sauce and 1 tablespoon of chili powder.  If you just love a nice and well balanced sauce, eat as is.  This is why this sauce is the best sauce around.

NY Strip Steaks with Bourbon Steak Sauce

NY strips with bourbon steak sauce

I purchased a ton of Kingsford Charcoal as fuel for cooking during the Hurricane.  I ended up not needing it all, so I decided to start grilling more with the charcoal grill.  Although it may take a tad bit longer to set up, using a charcoal grill gives you a ton of flavor.  It is … Read moreNY Strip Steaks with Bourbon Steak Sauce

Sweet and Tangy Memphis Style BBQ Sauce

Memphis Style BBQ Sauce

I am always on the look out for new sauce recipes.  This past weekend I dusted off the smoker and made some pulled pork.  Dana’s family was in town and her Dad said he was a fan of Memphis style sauces.  So I went around the interwebs and found this one.  It was quick and easy to make and I had all of the ingredients.  BTW- When you start barbecuing regularly your pantry starts to run wild.  You start finding yourself stocking 30 different types of vinegar, every spice known to man and a few cases of apple juice (great for basting).  I have also started to buy Mason Jars in bulk.  Who knew.  Back to the sauce, it is sweet, tangy and full of flavor.  Not to mention, it is super simple to make.  It has all powdered spices so no need to blend molten hot sauce.  Basically this is a super tasty and easy sauce to make.

This sauce goes great on a pulled pork sandwich, slathered over some ribs or even as the secret ingredient for bbq baked beans.

Balsamic Barbecued Chicken

The weather here in DC has been all over the place.  We have had snow one day and a sunny 65 degree day the next.  Who knows what it is going to look like tomorrow.  When it is nice, I like to take advantage of it, you never know when it is gonna snow.  It just so happened that earlier this week we had a 65 degree day.  So I immediately began planning a barbecue.  It has been so long since I fired up the Weber that I did not know what to cook.  So I researched a good barbecue recipe.  I finally came upon a barbecue sauce recipe from Giada that used balsamic vinegar as the base.  I was intrigued.  So I made.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

I grill and barbecue all of the time, but I usually don’t make my own sauce.  It is quite easy to do, but I never seem to use the right ingredients to make it tasty.  I have done it in the past and it really hasn’t turned out that great.  I usually make the sauce too sweet or too tangy.  I was messing around in the kitchen the other day and I finally got the perfect sauce.  It is thick, tangy, sweet and spicy.  I used tomato paste as the base to make the sauce thicker.  It is amazing.

It takes a few ingredients but it is worth it.
