Cowtown Sauce

BBQ Sauce Review: Cowtown Bar-B-Q Sauce

I collect barbecue sauces wherever I go. I don’t care if it is a farmer’s market, grocery store, big box store or even a back alley. Ok, the back alley might be a stretch. But you get my drift. On my latest trip to World Market I noticed that they had a nice selection of sauces. So I gravitated toward the KC sauces and picked up some Cowtown. This sauce is known around the bbq community as a great sauce. It even won best sauce in the world at the American Royal. Not too many sauces can say that.

Cowtown Sauce

Straight out of the Bottle

This sauce has a slight vinegary kick but really screams tangy tomato.  It is well balanced with zesty finish that is not over-powering. The sauce has a great deep red color with a nice texture that feels a little thicker than most on the tongue.  My son gives it two thumbs up, which can be deciphered to mean that it is not spicy. I agree with him that the sauce is not spicy but has a great flavor.

The Chicken Test

This sauce was great straight out of the bottle, but it really shined when caramelized over some chicken.  We grilled up some chicken breasts and slathered this sauce over then during the last 5-10 minutes of cooking. The sauce thickened up great in the smoker and the color did not change too much when heated.  The flavor of the sauce really shined through when it was caramelized.

Overall this is a great sauce.  It is a well balanced sauce that is good for all occasions. It has a nice tomato flavor that is more mild than sauces that I usually use. However, for a family with kids this is a go to sauce for us. It is mild enough for my son, with enough flavor to make my taste buds happy.

I picked up this sauce at World Market, but you can pick it up at plenty of places online. Check it out at the Kansas City BBQ Store online. It retails for around $4.
