Liam's Lemonade

Liam’s Lemonade

My son Liam loves to cook!  The other day he asked if he could make homemade lemonade.  I was happy to oblige.  I got out the stuff and he told me to walk away.  He was going to do it all.  I told him that I would need to help as he hasn’t graduated to using the stove or a sharp knife yet.  While he objected, he finally agreed as he really wanted lemonade.  Just to set the record straight, all I did was cut the lemons in half and heat up the simple syrup.

We chose the amounts for this recipe based on how you purchase ingredients.  A bag of lemons is 3lbs, so we started with that.  We then chose the sweetness and water content from there.

Lemons

Next fire up the stove and make some simple syrup.  Add 2 cups of water and 2 cups of sugar to a saucepan.

Making the simple syrup

Heat over low to medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.  Remove from the stove and let cool.

Simple Syrup

Juice 3 pounds of lemons.  We have a simple hand-held lemon squeezer that Liam simply loves.  He likes that it is yellow just like lemons.  He squeezed out all of the juice himself.  He was bright red by the time that he finished.

Juice the lemons

Strain the lemon juice into a pitcher.  Then add 1.5 cups of the simple sugar.  Remember you made a little over 2 cups of the stuff, so do not use it all.

Strain the lemon juice

Then add 6 1/2 cups of cold water to the pitcher.

Add the water

Stir and taste.

Stir and taste

Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more of the simple syrup.  I found that 1 1/2 cups was perfect.  However, Liam liked to add a teaspoon more of the simple syrup to his personal cup.

Liam's Homemade Lemonade

This is one of the most refreshing drinks that I have had.
